Collection Description

Biographical Note

Maxine Shapiro Goldstein was born in Augusta, Georgia on August 25, 1926. She attended Junior College of Augusta in 1945 and the University of Georgia in 1946. She married Jacob Louis Goldstein in 1947 with whom she had two children, Marcia and Harriet.

Goldstein has been an active volunteer in the Democratic Party since the 1960s. She has held positions on both the state and national level, serving on the Executive Committee of the National Democratic Committee from 1984 to 1990. She has been a delegate at every national convention between 1976 and 2008, where she has become famous for her outlandish hats. Her hats have been donated to the Smithsonian Institute, Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, and Richard B. Russell Library. Also, she served as a presidential elector in 1980 and has attended several National Democratic Party Conferences.

The Democratic Party of Georgia elected Goldstein vice-chair in 1982, a position she held until 1990. She has shown a continuing interest in women's issues, both state and national. She was a member of the Georgia Status of Women Commission from 1962 to 1970. Also, she served as director of the 8th district of the Georgia Federation of Democratic Women (1976-1978) and elected president in 1980. While serving as acting chair of the state party, she formed the Select Committee on Women's Issues, which brought its influence to bear on state legislation affecting women's rights.

Goldstein has held varied appointive positions of a civic nature, both state and regional. Among these, she was secretary of the Georgia State Commission of Indian Affairs, Fair Employment Practices Commission, Governor's Human Relations Commission, and served on the Georgia Holocaust Commission.

Goldstein has been leader in many community activities, serving as co-founder and president of the Milledgeville Woman's Club, Milledgeville Civic Woman's Club, Milledgeville Little Theatre, and Milledgeville Hadassah. She has been heavily involved in the Garden Club of Georgia and the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs. She served as chair of the Oconee Regional Development Commission and was a member of the Mayor's Commission on Downtown Revitalization.

In 1983, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution cited Goldstein as one of Georgia's influential women and she was honored by the City of Milledgeville as an outstanding citizen in 1985. That year she was also honored by the Georgia Senate. In 1987, Goldstein was honored as a woman of power by the National Council of Jewish Women and she received the Carl Vinson Award for Outstanding Women of the 8th Congressional District for the Democratic Party.
