Abstract: The collection consists of records of the Athens (Ga.) Klan #5 of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) from 1921-1930. The records include correspondence, newsletters, minutes, quarterly reports, membership cards, dues records, recommendation cards, receipts, and forms for robe requisitions relating to the activities of the Athens KKK #5. The correspondence (1921-1929) contains letters to the Klan asking for financial assistance, thank-yous for assistance rendered, as well as official correspondence, some from national KKK headquarters on membership standings, meetings, induction ceremonies, and recruitment. The correspondence also discusses Georgia politics, especially the 1926 gubernatorial election. The minutes (1925-1926) document Klan meetings and contain information on dues paid, elections, social events or official ceremonies, help for the needy, and investigations of new or current members. |
The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was a secret society organized in 1866 by Nathan Bedford Forest and other Confederate veterans to intimidate newly freed African Americans. Disbanded in 1869, the KKK re-emerged in 1915 under the leadership of William J. Simmons.
