Charles Ray Jones (1925-2015) was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, and grew up in Waycross, Georgia. At the age of seventeen, he joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Europe during World War II. He participated in Operation Neptune, and four months later, his ship hit a German mine and forced him to jump ship while it sank. He was rescued by British troops after bobbing in the English Channel in his life vest.
Ray met Clarice Mason in 1950 at an NCO dance in Savannah, Georgia, and they married in 1951. Shortly thereafter, Ray was deployed to fight in the Korean War. Once back in the states, he and Clarice purchased a farm outside of Pembroke, Georgia, where they raised five children.
This collection consists of letters written by Charles Ray Jones during his time served in the Korean War. The letters reveal the living condition of the United States military personnel stationed overseas, and the homesickness soldiers experienced.
