Collection Description

Historical Note

Robert Grier Stephens Jr. (1913-2003) was a graduate of the University of Georgia, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Georgia state Senator and Representative (1951-1959), and United States Congressman (1960-1976). He did extensive research on family history and in particular General Clement A. Evans, authoring the book "Intrepid Warrior."

Clement A. Evans (1833-1911) was born in Stewart County, Georgia. A judge of that county's court and a Georgia state senator. During the Civil War he served as a general in the Confederate States Army, and afterwards became a Methodist minister, retiring in 1892. He then served on the state board of prison commissioners, and wrote a great deal about the Civil War. For more information, see the article Clement Evans (1833-1911) in the New Georgia Encyclopedia.

Lawton Bryan Evans (1862–1934), son of General Clement A. Evans, earned a master's degree at the University of Georgia in 1881. He worked with the Augusta (Georgia) Board of Education as the superintentant of Augusta Schools, serving for 50 years. He was the author of many texts, speeches and lectures on teaching and education. Evans married Florence Campbell and they had three children: Sarah, Lawton Jr., and Clement Anselm. Clement died in a training accident with the Army Air Corps in Texas during World War I.
