George Mathews, a veteran of the Continental army, migrated to Wilkes County from Virginia between 1783 and 1784. He quickly rose to service as a state legislator, governor, and member of the U.S. Congress. Robert Bruce Cannady was a graduate student in history at the University of Georgia in 1957 and collected this material on Governor Mathews.

This collection contains a waistcoat believed to have been worn by Georgia Governor George Mathews during his second inauguration in 1793, a red wool sash worn by Mathews during his time serving as governor, and a pair of epaulettes possibly worn during is service in the American Revolution.
