His Army career began in 1925 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Officer Reserve Corps of the U. S. Cavalry. Scope and Content

The scrapbook (1942-1946) contains Army memos, letters, clippings and photographs of Thomas Whitehead and other officers. His handwritten commentary on each page gives more details about his Army career. A folder of loose items documents his return to military service (1950-1952) during the Korean War and his promotion to Colonel at the Army Chemical Center at Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. Whitehead was head of the Chemical Division, Chemical Corps Chemical and Radiological Laboratories and made several trips to Canada for chemical warfare research. The collection also includes military orders, forms, and correspondence from the 1940s through 1962. The remaining items relate to Thomas Whitehead's professional career in the Chemistry Department at the University of Georgia as well as his time as Dean of the Graduate School from 1968 to 1972.
