The Atlanta area weather bureau, located on the fifth floor of the Kimball House at the corner of Pryor and Marietta Streets, was initiated in September 1878 under the administration of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, Sargeant George H. Rohe was in command. In January 1883, the office moved to the U.S. Customs House on the corner of Marietta and Forsyth Streets. The office was moved to the 7th floor of the Gould Building at 10 Decatur Street in March 1889 and then back to the Customs House in May 1891. In July 1891, it was relocated to the Prudential Building at the corner of Walton and Broad Streets. In August 1901, it moved to the Empire Building at Broad and Forsyth, where it remained until March 1934 when it relocated to the Federal Annex at Hunter Street. The city office closed in April 1954. A second office was established at the Atlanta Airport in November 1928 and it became the official record in December 1934.
The Augusta area weather bureau office, located at McIntosh Street between Reynolds and Broad, was initiated on 2 November 1870. In May 1872, it relocated to Grays Building at the corner of Broad and McIntosh Streets. On 3 December 1878, the office moved to nos. 735 and 737 Reynolds Street where it remained until 30 April 1891. In May 1891, it relocated to the U.S. Government Building at the corner of Campbell and Greene Streets until 8 March 1916, when it finally moved to the U.S. Government Building at the corner of Barrett Plaza and Telfair Street.
This collection includes original data accumulated by weather bureau offices in both Atlanta's city (1878-1954) and airport (1931-1970) offices, Augusta (1870-1936), and Columbus (1946-1995). Included are handwritten hourly, daily, and monthly meteorological and climatological data sheets, reports, and observations. The Columbus records also include station log books (1942-1995) regarding equipment and expenses and several photographs of the office (1946, 1948). The general series has two volumes that relate to weather across the state, "Damaging weather in Georgia" and "Temperature average data sheets."
