Francis Lee Higginson (1841-1925) enlisted in the 54th Massachusetts USCT (United States Colored Troops). He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on February 28, 1863. On January 30, 1864, he was appointed Captain of the 5th Massachusetts Regiment, USCT.
The collection consists of four letters from Francis Lee Higginson to his father: dated St. Simons Island, June 16, 1863, regarding orders to Beaufort and Florida, and a raid along the way; dated Steamer Ben DeFord, Thursday, June 18, 1863, regarding orders to go to "the Camp of the 2nd S. C. and report to Montgomery with a hundred & fifty men"; dated St. Helena, July 7, 1863, regarding Pulaski, "Morris I," and diminishing officers; dated St. Helena, July 8, 1863, regarding the expedition to Darien.
