Daniel Coit Gilman (1831-1908) was an American educator and first president of Johns Hopkins University.
Henry Larcom Abbot (1831-1927) was Union soldier during the Civil War, and a railroad survey engineer.

The collection consists of one handwritten letter on North East Harbor, Me. letterhead: undated, "Dear General Abbot," signed "D. C. Gilman." Gilman states that he is Commissioner of Juries for the Atlanta (Georgia) Exhibition and asks Abbot to be one of the select jury to judge the exhibits.
