Historical Note

Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906) served as the commander of cavalry for the Confederate Army of Tennessee during the Civil War, then went on to a career as a member of Congress from Alabama next hit before returning to the military during the Spanish-American War. William J. Hardee (1815-1873) was a lieutenant general in the Confederate army, defending Savannah, Georgia during Gen. Sherman's campaign across Georgia. After the war Hardee moved to Selma, previous hitAlabama, where he worked in the warehouse and insurance businesses. He eventually became president of the Selma and Meridian Railroad.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of one letter: dated Griswoldville, November 22, 1864, to "Lt. General W.J. Hardee," signed "Joseph Wheeler, Major General," regarding Wheeler's proposed troop movement toward the Oconee Bridge due to enemy occupation of all roads to Milledgeville, Georgia.
