Pierce Butler (1744-1822) came to America in 1758 as an officer in the British Army. Butler was delegate to the Continental Congress in 1787; member of the convention which framed the Federal Constitution in 1787; elected to the United States Senate in 1789; reelected December 5, 1792, and served from March 4, 1789, to October 25, 1796.

The collection consists of one letter (and a transcript of the letter): dated Philadelphia, January 21, 1809, to "Mr. Petit de Villers," signed "P. Butler," regarding Mr. Spaulding, Mr. King, and damage done to one of Butler's extensive holdings in Georgia.
