As president of the class of 1908, J. Howard Neisler delivered the dedicatory speech for a very special gift of from his class to the University; the sundial in front of the Chapel that marks the location of the Toombs oak. Supposedly this was the spot to which Robert Toombs, using his oratorical skills, drew away attendees of the commencement ceremony of 1828 when he had been expelled from the University. The sundial stood as a monument to both Toombs and the Class of 1908 for some 60 years until it was stolen by unknown thieves, leaving only the pedestal to mark the location. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the gift, descendents of Neisler commissioned a magnificent replacement for the sundial, presenting it to the University in memory of J. Howard Neisler and his classmates. In addition to many other accomplishment, Neisler was an enthusiastic photographer and assembled a rich collection of snapshots showing, among other things, Athens and University life during the 1904-1908 period. The family kindly loaned up Neisler's album for scanning so that his work could be shared with researchers.
In addition to photographs and material commemorating the rededication of the sundial, this collection contains the original text of J. Howard Neisler's 1908 speech. There are also discs with scans of his photographic album and other student memorabilia plus a print index showing the images. The materials date from 1904 through 2008.
