Collection Description
Biographical Note
Martha and her twin sister Margaret were born in 1933 in Gainesville, GA. After graduating from Georgia State University, Martha embarked on a career in government working first for Judge Luther Alverson, Congressman Chris Weltner, and then Lt. Governor Peter Zack Geer. Known as one of the fastest typists in the State Capitol, she eventually joined the administration of Lester Maddox as n assistant to Press Secretary Bob Short.
In 1969 she left the Capitol to become Senator Richard Russell's staff assistant, where she served until the Senator's death in 1971. She worked briefly in the office of David Gambrell before eventually accepting an invitation to be Senator Sam Nunn's personal secretary. In 1977 she was recommended for a position in the Export-Import Bank by President Carter.
Tate retired to Atlanta in 2006, where she passed away in 2011.
Scope and Content
This scrapbook was assembled by friends of Martha Tate--Ann Grant and Sherri Floyd. It documents Martha's long career in Washington DC, working in the offices of Wyche Fowler, Richard Russell, and Sam Nunn, among others. It primarily contains photographs, but there are a number of pieces of correspondence documenting Tate's career in government.
