Known as one of the fastest typists in the State Capitol, she eventually joined the administration of Lester Maddox as n assistant to Press Secretary Bob Short.
In 1969 she left the Capitol to become Senator Richard Russell's staff assistant, where she served until the Senator's death in 1971. She worked briefly in the office of David Gambrell before eventually accepting an invitation to be Senator Sam Nunn's personal secretary. In 1977 she was recommended for a position in the Export-Import Bank by President Carter.
Tate retired to Atlanta in 2006, where she passed away in 2011.
