Collection Description

Biographical Note

Margaret S. Appleby McCormick was Senator Richard B. Russell's personal secretary from 1936 to 1948. She attended Young Harris Junior College in Young Harris, Georgia, and later graduated from law school. Prior to working with Senator Russell, McCormick taught for two years at Danburg Consolidated School in Georgia, and from 1932 to 1934 was secretary to Senator Russell's brother Robert. She left the Senator's office upon marrying Army Signal Corps Lieutenant-Colonel Harold McCormick in 1948.

Scope and Content

The collection includes forty-nine black and white photographs belonging to Margaret Appleby McCormick, taken during her employment with Senator Russell, and photocopies of six clippings mentioning McCormick. The photographs are a variety of sizes from 8x10" to 2.5x2.5", and depict Senator Russell and McCormick at work in Senator Russell's office or outdoors. Many are of Senator Russell's other female staff members (Mae Viccellio, Marjorie Warren, Ann Norman, Clara Smith, and Lillian Coogle) in Washington, D.C. in the snow and in springtime. The collection also includes several photos of Senator Russell and several other men on what appears to be a fishing trip, and at an unidentified dam. The clippings document Lillian Coogle; Senator Russell's visit with Madame Chiang Kai-shek; McCormick's wedding announcement; an article "Crackerland in Washington," by Ralph Smith, regarding Joseph E. Chappell becoming Russell's newest secretary; and a full-page collage titled "A Workday with Georgia's Junior Senator." Only one clipping gives the newspaper title and date – a Washington Post photo dated December 19, 1944, announcing the marriage of Captain and Mrs. William Beard Sturtevant.
