Collection Description
Biographical Note
Aubrey C. Evans attended the University of Georgia, where he was President of the Demosthenian Literary Society during the winter quarter of 1934. He lived for a time in Winder, Georgia. He later became an attorney and moved to New Orleans, where he was a member of the University of Georgia Alumni Club of Louisiana. He was a long-time supporter of Senator Richard B. Russell, and gave an address promoting Russell's presidential campaign to the students at Loyola University in 1952.
Scope and Content
The collection contains 20 letters and one 7-page speech transcript. The letters are primarily between Aubrey Evans and Richard B. Russell, Jr. They span nearly forty years and follow the developing careers of Aubrey Evans and Senator Russell. The correspondence begins with a 1932 letter from Russell to Honorable Philip Weltner, recommending Evans for college financial aid. In following letters, Evans and Senator Russell express gratitude for each other's support, as well as congratulations and interest in the other's career progress. Also included are two letters to Evans from Robert Russell, asking for Evans' support with Senator Russell's campaign for Congress, and referring to his own appointment as Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals, 5th Circuit.
Throughout the correspondence, Evans expresses support for Senator Russell and his campaigns, first for Congress and then his failed campaign for President. Russell writes several times thanking Evans for invitations to visit or give talks in Georgia and later New Orleans, but declining due to a full schedule. He congratulates Evans on his accomplishments, such as becoming president of the Demosthenian Literary Society at the University of Georgia. The collection ends with correspondence between Russell and Assistant Secretary for Congressional Relations William B. Macomber, Jr., including a 1968 recommendation letter supporting Evans' wish to be appointed Ambassador of Guatemala. The last letter is a Christmas greeting from Russell to Evans in New Orleans, dated January 1971.
The speech transcript is from a 1952 address by Evans to the student body of Loyola University in New Orleans. The transcript is included with a copy of a letter from Hale Boggs to Senator Russell, with a note to Evans explaining that Boggs has forwarded it to Russell. The speech is in support of Russell's campaign for president, and it details his life, accomplishments and qualifications for office.
