Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteOlin Downes (1886-1955) was an American music critic with the Boston Post (1906-1924) and the New York Times (1924-1955). Scope and ContentThe Personal and Family papers consist of personal papers of the Downes and Miles families from 1908-1962. Includes family correspondence, financial records (1916-1962), newspaper clippings, notebooks and engagement books, and some personal effects such as gloves. The bulk of the series is comprised of the family correspondence of Olin Downes (1906-1955), his wife Irene Miles Downes (1936-1946), his mother Louise Courson Downes (1908-1940), his sisters Dorothy Downes Culthe (1909-1956) and Frances Downes Behre (1911-1962), and his daughter Nancy Downes Smith (1922-1955). Also includes correspondence between Irene Miles Downes and her mother Laura M. Miles and her brothers and sisters. Organization and ArrangementThe materials are organized into four subseries: 1. Diaries, Notebooks and Calendars; 2. Genealogy and Family Correspondence; 3. Financial papers; and 4. Miscellaneous. This finding aid represents just one portion of the Olin Downes papers, which all together consists of correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, printed materials, articles, music manuscripts, and lectures.
