Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteRichard Henry Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland on September 24, 1789 and died in New Orleans, Louisiana, September 10, 1847. He moved to Augusta, Georgia in 1802, engaged in mercantile pursuits, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1809. He commenced practice in Augusta, became solicitor general of the superior court of Richmond County and attorney general of Georgia (1811-1813). Wilde was elected to Congress as a Republican (1815-1817), and then again (1827-1835). For more information, see his congressional biography. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of two original letters from Richard H. Wilde: dated August 6, 1818, recipient unknown, regarding legal matters; March 31, 1840, to William Mann, Esq. in Venice, requesting a reference from the library of St. Mark in Venice, with "My life is like the summer rose," and two clippings regarding the death of Richard Henry Wilde attached. Also included are two copies, made in 1957, of letters from Richard H. Wilde: dated November 27, 1834, to R. Gilmer; March 1, 1845, to Abbot Lawrence, Boston, introducing Mr. J. E. Johnson, the artist who will be erecting a statue of Dr. Benjamin Franklin. The final page consists of typed notes copied from Dr. E. Tucker, regarding pictures, portraits, and a bust of Wilde.
