Captain J. D. Johnston Confederate States Navy sword
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJ. D. Johnston was a Captain in the U.S. Navy and one of the officers on Commodore Perry's ships, when Perry opened Japan to world commerce. During the war between the states, Johnston resigned from the U.S. Navy and entered Confederate service. Captain Johnston was second in command of the iron clad ram "Tennessee" under Admiral Buchanan at the Battle of Mobile Bay. During the battle Admiral Buchanan was wounded and Captain Johnson succeeded in command until he was forced to surrender. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of one sword in scabbard, formerly property of Captain J. D. Johnston, Confederate States Navy.
