Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteThe Dugas de Vallon family, a prominent plantation family from Saint-Domingue, immigrated to Washington, Georgia as refugees in the 1790s. Madame Louis Dugas ran the Boarding School for Select Young Ladies until 1810. Her son, Louis Alexander Dugas (1806-1898), was one of the founders of the Medical College of Georgia. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of a detailed inventory of: land owned in Saint-Domingue (present day Haiti), family papers, a list of revenues, debts in Saint-Domingue and France, and a list of property and assets, including enslaved people owned by the family. Although the document is not dated, it is believed to have originated after 1807, the year that Louis Rene Adrien Dugas de Vallon died. The document is handwritten in French.
