Oscar Lowery diary
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteDr. Oscar W. Lowery (1845-1931) served in the 6th Iowa Infantry, U.S. Army during the Civil War. He participated in the Atlanta campaign, seeing major action at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, among several other smaller skirmishes, before entering Atlanta from Jonesboro. He was also a part of Sherman's campaign across Georgia and was wounded in action at Griswoldville, outside of Macon. He continued on to Savannah and was hospitalized at Beaufort, South Carolina, before rejoining his regiment in North Carolina shortly before the war ended. His unit continued northward to Washington, DC and participated in reviews in front of the U.S. Capitol. After the war, he went back to Iowa, studied medicine, and became a practicing doctor. He wrote a wartime diary that also contains significant information on his family history, noting that his father and mother were early settlers to the Iowa Territory before statehood. Scope and ContentThis collection consists of a diary kept throughout the Civil War, as well as a written history of the Lowery family of Iowa.
