Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJohn McClatchey came to North Carolina from Ireland in the mid-18th century. His great-grandson, Wiley Jarrett moved to Tennessee, where Devereaux Fore (D.F.) was born. D.F. later moved to Cobb County, beginning the McClatchey legacy of the Atlanta area. D.F. invested in real estate, allowing his family to live comfortably. D.F.'s son Marvin Reynolds McClatchey followed in his father's footsteps as he began his own family with Juliet Neel of Cartersville. Their two children, Julia and Marvin Jr. took an interest in their family heritage, particularly after the death of their father in 1939. Julia stayed home with their mother to tend to help her while also working, and Marvin Jr. used his degree in chemical engineering to gain work at an aluminum company in Ohio. Following this, he became a lieutenant in the navy and was stationed in Washington, where he met his wife Sally Bruce Blackford. In 1946, the same year that Julia married Russell Brooke, Marvin Jr. started the Southern Aluminum Finishing Company. Several of his children took an interest in his company, which is run to this day by his two youngest sons. The McClatchey and Neel family lines have been thoroughly studied by Marvin and Juliet's children. The family can be traced far beyond the American Southeast. There are still McClatchey relatives in Ireland, originating back to ancestors shared with John McClatchey. Some of his direct descendants have remained in North Carolina, while others have travelled west. The states of Tennessee, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Georgia contain many McClatchey cousins, but some have gone as far out as California. Moderate success has followed these family lines, inspiring them to have large family reunions as well as newsletters to keep the family tree up to date and informed. This family's long history has inspired passion and respect between members to continue to strive for information about their shared past and motivation for future accomplishments to tell. Scope and ContentMarvin McClatchey Jr. (1916-2002), son of Marvin McClatchey (1886-1939) and Juliet Neel McClatchey (1885-1960), and Sally Bruce Blackford McClatchey (1922-2015) are the main focus of the genealogical compilation. Various research files trace the McClatchey line back to John McClatchey from Ireland in the mid-18th century, but original documents are not present until reaching files from the late 19th century.
