Sir John Glubb letters to Diane Hanson
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteSir John Glubb (1897-1986) was a British soldier, scholar and author. Also known as Glubb Pasha, he led and trained Trans-Jordan's Arab Legion (1939-1956) and served in France during World War I. After leaving the Arab Legion, he lectured and wrote numerous books. While lecturing at Troy State University (AL), he met Diane Hanson who assisted him during a medical emergency. They became friends and he considered her as an adopted daughter. Glubb was married to Muriel Rosemary Forbes (1912-2005) and they had one son Godfrey (1939-2004). They also adopted a Bedouin daughter Naomi, and two Palestinian children Mary and John. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of correspondence from Sir John Glubb in Mayfield, England to Diane Hanson during the years 1971-1986 as she worked at Troy State University (AL), Brenau University (Gainesville, GA), and High Point University (NC). There are also printed obituaries and memorials, photographs, and several handwritten chapters of Glubb's book The Way of Love. There are no letters from Diane, but Glubb's letters are filled with his opinions on politics, religion, women's rights, and Middle East history. He includes inspirational quotations with most letters and gives many details of his health and family.
