Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJoseph Lewis Collier (1924-2010) was born in Cedar Valley, Georgia to Joseph Taylor Collier and Lorena Lewis Collier. They moved to Montezuma (Ga.) and he graduated as valedictorian from Montezuma High School in 1941. While attending the University of Georgia, he met Leila Grace Hardigree (d. 2008) daughter of Dock Thomas and Annie Hardigree. They married in 1943 and had three children – Elaine, Lewis Thomas, and Richard Davis. Joseph Collier worked as an insurance agent for Life Insurance Company of Georgia. After retirement, he and his wife Grace were active in the Athens Historical Society and Antioch Christian Church. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of biographical information, correspondence, printed material, photographs and an artifact. Most of the correspondence is from "Joe" to his mother "Rena," beginning in 1942 when he was a student at the University of Georgia. Later letters give details of family life. The printed material includes numerous Athens Historical Society items. Of special interest is Joseph Collier's University of Georgia X Club jacket.
