Historical Note

The letters were written by a man identified only as "Ed" who was enlisted in Company K, First Regiment Vermont Volunteers, to his wife Gertrude during the Spanish-American War. The Spanish-American War lasted ten weeks, ending with the 1898 Treaty of Paris, in which America received colonial authority over Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Phillipines, and temporary control of Cuba.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of letters written by a young soldier to his wife that concerns life during the Spanish-American War. The letters appear to come from camps in Georgia or Tennessee, and are not from the battlefront.
