Smith was a printer's apprentice from Darke County, Ohio, who mustered into F Company, Ohio 94th Infantry, U.S. Army, on August 24th, 1862 at the age of eighteen. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of correspondence from William E. Smith to his mother from August 21, 1862-March 27, 1865. Correspondence details weather, rumors, marching details, orders and logistics. Smith writes from Murfreesboro and Chattanooga, Tennessee; Graysville, Georgia; Chickamauga Bridge, Tennessee; Resaca and Marietta, Georgia; and camps near the Chattahoochee River and at Jonesborough, Georgia. He also writes from Savannah, Georgia and camp near Goldsboro, North Carolina. The collection also includes a photograph of Smith in civilian clothes and a typescript of the correspondence.
