Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJohn K. Mayes fought in the Civil War as a private in the Confederate Army beginning August 1861. He was appointed 5th Sergeant on February 24, 1862. He was killed at Manassas Gap, Virginia on July 23, 1863 and is buried in Warren County, Georgia. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of a letter written by John K. Mayes to his parents from Portsmouth, Virginia, and two copybooks in which are drafts of letters and copies of statements about vacation, printing papers, and departure from school. Also included is a bill of sale for "one negro man, Aaron, about thirty-three of yellow complexion" (1853) to Josiah Brinkley. Administrative InformationPreferred CitationJohn K.
