Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJesse Luke McCanless was a soldier with the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe, he resided in Canton, Georgia. He participated in the Normandy invasion, and travelled through France and Germany. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of correspondence from McCanless during his military service with the U.S. Army in World War II, to his father Leo McCanless, his stepmother Kathleen McCanless, and his Aunt Inez Doss, all of Canton, Georgia. From August 1942 - June 1944 McCanless wrote from various military training camps in the United States describing his training activities, the areas, and news of family and friends. After June 1944, McCanless wrote from England, France, Belgium, and Germany. His letters describe his trip overseas, the English countryside, the destruction in France, United Service Organization Shows, prices for commodities, V-E day and peace, his opinion of the German people, his duties questioning Germans to determine their role in the war, and his participation in the Normandy invasion and the destruction and casualties from the battle.
