Slate-Yonge collection
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteSamuel Jordan Slate (1873-1931) served as the state of Georgia's first auditor from 1924-1929. Slate was born in in Halifax County, Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia. He came to Georgia at the age of 25 to travel for a buggy manufacturer based in Columbus. He met Miss Yonge in that city and began a correspondence which lasted for many years, until their marriage. Slate later served as game and fish commissioner for the state. The couple had three children: Sarah Watkins, Mary Yonge and Samuel, Jr.. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of primarily the correspondence of Samuel Jordan Slate with Sarah "Wattie" Watkins Yonge before their marriage. Other materials include several clippings concerning Slate's career, certificates, and photographs.
