Historical Note

Robert Goodwin Mitchell (1843-1926) was a soldier with Company B of the 29th Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, he married Nettie (Amaretta) Fondren (1845-1929) in 1864 and resided in Thomasville, Georgia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence between Mitchell and Nettie Fondren during his service with the 29th Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Mitchell served mainly in Georgia and along the coast. His letters describe the evacuation of Savannah (Ga.), the battle of Chickamauga (Ga.), the siege of Chattanooga (Tenn.), and the Atlanta Campaign. Nettie's letters, many written from the Lucy Cobb Institute (Athens, Ga.), describe life during the Civil War and news of family and friends. The collection also contains correspondence from other family members or friends, photographs, and a scrapbook containing clippings pertaining to the lives of Robert and Nettie after the war.
