Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteRaphael Thomas Semmes, the nephew of the Confederate Admiral Raphael Semmes, was born and raised in Canton, Mississippi. He worked in the hardware business for Tommey, Gregg & Beck, later Beck & Gregg, and most recently Genuine Hardware Co. Mr. Semmes then moved to Savannah, and set up his own business, R.T. Semmes and Company in 1896, later incorporated in 1901 as Semmes Hardware Company. In 1983 the business was sold to a firm based in North Carolina. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of four oversized cash receipt books, 1968-1973 and four freight receipt and stock record books, dating from ca. 1915-1920s from the Semmes Hardware Company in Savannah, Georgia.
