Collection DescriptionScope and ContentThe collection consists of an account book for a general store, sawmill, and grist mill in Clinton and Macon, Georgia owned by John C. Carter. Ledger entries (1831-1837) include the customer's name, item purchased, and price pertaining to sales of food, household goods, furniture, and lumber. Additional entries relate to the hire of slaves for work, IOUs for cash or materials, Carter's practice of using peddlers to sell watches, persons receiving meal, and grist mill business.
