Walter Westman papers
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteWalter Westman was among the forerunners in the area of biogeography to incorporate remote sensing into the study of plant communities. In addition to his field work Westman sought to show how ecological principles should influence policy-making in his 1985 book Ecology, Impact Assessment and Environmental Planning. In the final years of his life Westman sought to promote gay rights and encourage research into finding a cure for AIDS. Scope and ContentThe Walter Westman papers are comprised of material from his far ranging research on the effects of climate change on vegetation. A significant portion pertains to his study of the response of California coastal sage to air pollution, fire, and climate change. There are a couple of files related to advocacy for gay and lesbian civil rights and AIDS related correspondence.
