Collection Description

Historical Note

The Office of Bicentennial Planning was created by University President Fred Davison in 1980, and charged with the responsibility of planning and executing the Bicentennial Celebration for the University of Georgia. Dr. Tom Dyer was appointed General Chairman for the Bicentennial Celebration, and Dr. Carol Winthrop was appointed director of the Office of Bicentennial Planning. Following completion of its mission, the Office of Bicentennial Planning ceased operations in June of 1986.

Scope and Content

This collection contains papers relating to the planning of the University of Georgia's bicentennial celebration. This includes correspondence, committee minutes, programs, and clippings. Of note are correspondence and papers from President Jimmy Carter, President Ronald Reagan, President Gerald Ford, and Vice President George Bush. Also included is memorabilia from the bicentennial celebrations.
