 Fitzgerald family letters
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteDavid Benton Fitzgerald was born on April 20, 1844, in Stewart County, Georgia. He enlisted in the Army of the Confederacy in 1861 (Bartow Guards, Co. E, #1st Georgia Infantry Regiment), and served under Stonewall Jackson. He attended the University of Georgia, graduating with an A.B. degree in 1870, and served as a member of the Georgia State Legislature from 1884 and through 1885. He married Mary Crowley in 1873 and the couple had six children. D.B. Fitzgerald died on January 1, 1919. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of letters David Benton Fizgerald wrote to his mother, sister (Polly Ann Fitzgerald), and brother (John E. Fitzgerald) while attending the University of Georgia. He writes to his mother about about his studies of natural philosphy and mechanics and states his interest in his siblings education. To his sister he describes the birth of the first camous literay serial/news organ at the University of Georgia, the "Georgian Collegian", and speaks of the presence of illness on campus in late February of 1870. He writes to his brother asking to resolve an issue regarding two books he mailed money for but never recieved. The collection also includes printed scans of the "History of Stewart County Georgia" and a compiled service record of Confederate soldiers who served in organizations from Georgia.
