Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteDr. Donald R. Eastman was the University of Georgia's vice president for development and university relations. In this role, Eastman managed a fund-raising program that completed a $150 million capital campaign and doubled private giving. In addition to leading development of the university's comprehensive strategic plan as vice president for strategic planning and public affairs, he also helped lay the groundwork for the Archway to Excellence campaign and had a key role in establishing the university's campus in Gwinnett County that evolved into Georgia Gwinnett College. Eastman was born in Virginia and graduated from the University of Tennessee before earning his Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida. He served as vice president of university relations and vice president of strategic planning and public affairs at the University of Georgia from 1991 through 2001. Dr. Eastman served as president of Eckerd College from 2001 through 2020. During his time as president of Eckerd College, applications to the college's residential program increased fifty-eight percent, enrollment climbed and alumni donations through the annual fund more than doubled. The college invested more than $32 million in new construction, including a $15 million library and an $11 million residence hall, and Eckerd ranked the nation's top baccalaureate institution in the proportion of undergraduates who study abroad. Prior to his employment at the University of Georgia, Eastman was acting vice president for university relations at Cornell University, and before that he was at the University of Tennessee as executive assistant to the chancellor and executive director of university communications.
