Collection DescriptionBiographicalJoyce Carter Stevens is a native of Adel, Georgia. She was appointed Exective Director of the Georgia Republican Party in 1981, leaving the position a year later to manage the Dave Sellers for Congress Campaign. In 1984, Stevens became the first female candidate on the general election ballot in Georgia when she ran for a position on the Public Service Commission. She ran for State Senate against Renee Unterman in 2002. Stevens joined Browning-Ferris Industries in 1988, where she would become the Division Vice President of Legislation and Regulation. She also served on the Board of Advisors and Executive Committee of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. In 1995, she founded the Stevens Group along with her husband John Phinizy Stevens. Scope and ContentThis collection documents the activities of Joyce Carter Stevens and her role in the Georgia Republican Party. It contains campaign documents and materials from her run for the Public Service Commission and the State Senate, correspondence, documents from The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and materials from her time working on other Georgia Republican campaigns.
