Collection DescriptionBiographical NoteBryant T. Castellow was born near Georgetown, Georgia in Quitman County on July 29, 1876. In 1897, he graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in law and passed the bar that same year. He began practicing law in 1898 in Fort Gaines, Georgia. Castellow also became involved in many aspects of the community before his career in the legislature. From 1897 to 1898, he served as the superintendent of public schools in Coleman County. He was also elected solicitor of Clay County court in 1900, remaining there until 1901. Upon leaving this position, Castellow served as judge of Clay County until 1905. In 1906, he moved to Cuthbert, Georgia in Randolph County in order to become a referee in bankruptcy court. He also served as solicitor general of the Pataula judicial circuit from 1913 until he resigned in 1932 in order to fill the House of Representatives seat left vacant by the resignation of Charles R. Crisp. That same day, he was also elected as the Third District's Representative for the 73rd Congress. Castellow was later re-elected in 1934 to the 74th Congress. During his term in office, Castellow was influential in postal appointments and was elected as Secretary of the House Steering Committee for the Fifth Regional District. Castellow was a vigorous opponent to the New Deal and was very concerned about the consequences of fiscal irresponsibility and centralized government. He did not run for re-election in 1936, however. Instead, he retired from politics as well as private practice. Castellow spent a great deal of time pursuing his hobby, hunting, until his death on July 23, 1962 in Cuthbert, Georgia. Scope and ContentThe Bryant T. Castellow Papers consist of materials from Castellow's term in the U.S. House of Representatives from the Third District of Georgia. Included in these papers are personal papers, congressional records from postal appointments, voting records, bills and speeches, as well as posthumous letters of sympathy and tribute received by friends and colleagues. Organization and ArrangementThe Papers are organized into three series: I. Personal, II. Congressional, and III. Katherine Hutton Castellow Files. Types of materials include correspondence, speeches, printed materials, bills and receipts, journals, and clippings. There was no discernible original order, so each series is arranged chronologically, with the exception of collections of correspondence, which are arranged alphabetically by surname and chronologically thereunder.
