Historical Note

"[Charles Dickens was] born Feb. 7, 1812, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. [He] died June 9, 1870, Gad's Hill, near Chatham, Kent. [Dickens was an] English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian era. His many volumes include such works as A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, and Our Mutual Friend."--"Dickens, Charles" Encyclopaedia Britannica

Scope and Content

The collection consists of pictures, scrapbooks, clippings from magazines and newspapers, typescripts of reviews of Nicholas Nickleby, programs, books and plays, engravings by R. Turner, 1838, for Nicholas Nickleby, pictures of actors and actresses, 18 pictures of Charles Dickens himself, scenes from plays, such as The Only Way (A Tale of Two Cities), David Copperfield, Oliver Twist and others, a Christmas card, and covers of two pieces of music from two of Dickens' books: Dombey and Son and Little Dorrit.
