Collection Description

Historical Note

Dr. George Baber Atkinson (1843-1923) of Athens, Georgia received a medical degree at Atlanta Medical College but was associated with a number of private schools in Georgia including Lawrenceville Academy, Winterville Academy, Ringgold Masonic Institute, Maysville School and Danielsville Academy. Dr. Atkinson was a Confederate soldier in Troup's Artillery and was wounded at Sharpsburg.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of letters, two scrapbooks, writings, indenture, 19 photographs and Bible of the ancestors, family and descendants of Dr. Atkinson (1843-1923) of Athens and Winterville.

Many of the letters are to and from his sister Miss Fannie Atkinson of Clarke County and there are drawings done by her while she was a student at Montpelier Institute in Monroe County. There is also a Bible carried by Dr. Atkinson as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War and scrapbooks about Troup's Artillery. After his education at Franklin College was interrupted in 1861, he and other veterans received their diplomas at the 1914 commencement. A letter from Chancellor Barrow, a program, and newspaper clippings about the event are in the collection. The photographs, both original and good copies, are of the Atkinson and Buffington families. Of special note is the carte de visite of R. E. Lee, autographed, which was removed from the collection to the vault.
