John MacPherson Berrien (1781-1856) was a lawyer, Georgia Senator (1822-1823), U.S. Senator (1824-1829 and 1841-1852), and U.S. Attorney-General (1829-1831).

Scope and Content

The collection consists of five letters from John MacPherson Berrien to Littleton W. Tazewell from 1825-1849. Correspondence regards U.S. politics, congressional matters, and George Healy. Also included are two summonses signed by Berrien as Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary of the Senate of the United States. The summonses, dated January 16, 1845, are addressed to the Marshall of the United States for the Southern District of New York; and Abraham Asten, Jesse Oakley, Andrew Warner, and James W. Metcalf.
