Historical Note

William H. Maxey, Confederate soldier with Company K (Oglethorpe Rifles) of the 8th Georgia Infantry Regiment, died March 15, 1862.

Scope and Content

The collection primarily consists of correspondence from William H. Maxey to his father, Jeremiah Maxey, from June-December 1861. Maxey details events from Manassas Junction and Winchester, Virginia. He describes battles, his health, stays in the hospital, wounded soldiers, and rumors of troop movements. The collection also contains correspondence to Jeremiah Maxey from other soldiers, and a poem titled The Dying Soldier. A letter to Jeremiah dated Richmond, Virginia, March 17, 1862, from Thomas Gilham, describes William Maxey's death.
