Historical Note

Wills Hill (1718-1793) was known as the Earl of Hillsborough and later Marquis of Downshire.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a letter from Wills Hill (at that time, Earl of Hillsborough), Whitehall, to acting governor James Habersham, Savannah, Georgia dated April 1, 1772. The letter discusses Indian depredations, smallpox, an appropriation for the support of the "civil establishment of Georgia for the present year", says he encloses copy of estimate upon which grant is founded "for your direction in the Application thereof," mentions an increase in the allowance for purchase of "implements and utensils for improving the manufacture of raw silk."
