Collection Description

Historical Note

Historic Cobbham Foundation grew out of a neighborhood group formed in 1971. Residents formed the group to resist further erosion of the residential character of Cobbham neighborhood in Athens, Georgia. In 1977 the district was received in the National Register of Historic Places, and the Foundation was incorporated with its tax exempt, non-profit status. The Foundation continues to sponsor yearly events and support urban residential revitalization efforts.

Scope and Content

This collection consists primarily of records kept by the Historic Cobbham Foundation from its beginnings in the early 1970s to early 1990s. During that time, most writing and correspondence are from the foundation's founder, Phinizy Spalding. Also included are committee, project, and event papers that succeed his death in 1994.
