Historical Note

James Jewel Jr. (1834-1865) married Elizabeth "Eliza" Colclough in 1859. He served in the Echols Light Artillery in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was killed in Averasborough, North Carolina.

James' brother William Jewel (1830-1910) married Martha Taylor in 1859, and served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

James' sister Sarah "Sallie" Jewel married Edwin Campbell in 1871.

The Jewel family were farmers during this period from Oglethorpe County, Georgia.

Scope and Content

This collection contains Civil War era correspondence between siblings James, William and Sallie and their spouses, cousins and parents. Some transcriptions are provided for James Jewel's letters.
