Historical Note
Marie Hodgson Koenig was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Harry Lowe Hodgson and Jamie Sconyers Hodgson and was raised in Athens, Georgia. She graduated from the University of Georgia with bachelor's and master's degrees in Journalism and moved to Washington, D.C. to work as a researcher for National Geographic. She then joined the U.S. Information Agency (USIA) where she wrote foreign policy articles as a diplomatic correspondent for nineteen years. In 1987, she returned to Athens, Georgia with her husband John Koenig, Jr.
John Koenig, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Alice and John Koenig, Sr. He received degrees in Journalism from Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania while working as the Temple campus sports correspondent. After graduating in 1941, he worked for the Philadelphia Bulletin. The following year, he joined the U.S. Nineth Air Force and wrote two official Air Force Weather Service histories, as well as journals about his travels through Europe during the war. Upon his return to the U.S., he continued his work at the Philadelphia Bulletin before joining the Associated Press in Harrisburg in 1949. In 1956, he moved to Washington, D.C. to report on the federal government and retired as Director of Government Affairs Information and editor of association national publications at the National Forest Products Association in 1985. Additionally, Koenig published numerous freelance travel articles over the years, many of which featured the homes of renown American and European writers. After retiring, He moved to Athens, Georgia with his wife Marie.
Scope and Content
This collection contains the papers of John and Marie Koenig related to their careers as journalists, genealogical research, and traveling. The collection includes newspaper clippings of their articles, correspondence, notes, journals, notebooks, postcards, and numerous photograph albums documenting Marie's work as a diplomatic correspondent, John's military service in Europe during World War II, and his work as a reporter and travel writer. The genealogical research included relates to the Hodgson family of Athens, Georgia.
