Historical Note

Emma R. Heidelbach was a wealthy society woman from New York City. She went to France during World War I to serve as Ambulance Corps auxiliary and boost morale. She was married to notable investment banker Seward Heidelbach, who disappeared in 1907 only to turn up several months later in Europe, having supposedly suffered from amnesia. Emma Heidelbach died during an apartment gas explosion in 1950.

Scope and Content

Consists of correspondence and a collection of other written and printed ephemera belonging to Mrs. Emma R. Heidelbach during World War I. Notable items include a U.S. army song book from 1918, original typewritten poetry by U.S. soldiers, and four French handbills showing French opposition to the war and Germany.
