Historical Note

Alexander Hamilton Stephens (1812-1883) was a lawyer, politician, vice president of the Confederate States of America, and Georgia governor.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence of Alexander Hamilton Stephens, two are antebellum letters written while Stephens was a U. S. Congressman representing Georgia's 7th District. The first letter was written from Washington, February 10, 1850, requesting a copy of The Daily Globe be sent to a constituent. The second letter asks a "Dr. Lee" in Washington to perform editing services for an agricultural report. The eight postwar letters are written as a private citizen in Milledgeville and Crawfordville.
