Collection Description

Historical Note

Robert Toombs DuBose (1859-1929) married Jennie Stovall (1858-1946) and had a son Bolling Stovall (1889-1973) and two daughters. Bolling married Minnie Thomas, daughter of George Dudley and Katherine Morton Thomas. They had three children - Bolling Stovall, Jr. Katherine, and Janet (d. 2013). Janet married Austin Hill Barnett, Jr.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of biographical information, correspondence, writings, printed material, photographs, and a scrapbook. The correspondence is mainly of the Thomas and DuBose families, but there is also some material of related families Barnett, Toombs, White, Welch, Stovall, Morton and Van Epps. Although there are no original letters, there is some interesting information about Alexander Erwin Wilson and his wife Jane Smithey who were missionaries in South Africa 1835-1836. They were the grandparents of Jennie Stovall DuBose.

There are numerous photographs of the families, and Navy photographs of Austin Hill Barnett, Jr.

Printed material includes a booklet of the Athens High School reunion of the class of 1937 which included Janet DuBose.

The scrapbook was kept by Minnie Thomas and holds colorful advertisements circa 1879.
