Collection Description

Historical Note

The Academy Theatre, one of the oldest professional theaters in Georgia, and Southeastern Academy of Theatre and Music were created by Frank Wittow in 1956. The Southeastern Academy offered acting classes, labs, children's programs, and a film series. Wittow served as the artistic director of the Academy Theatre until his death in 2006.The Theatre premiered the first Southeastern Shakespeare Festival in the summer of 1961.

Ted and Gloria Maloof met at the Academy Theatre in 1956 and married in 1959. Gloria Maloof attended the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia and was an active member of the Atlanta Radio Theatre and Atlanta Civic Theatre. After joining the Academy Theatre, Gloria Maloof became a member of the Academy's four-person acting ensemble.

Scope and Content

This collection includes 200 photographs, taken by Ted Maloof, of twenty-two plays performed in Atlanta primarily between 1960 and 1962. Nineteen of the plays were produced by the Academy Theatre (1960-1962), "The Boyfriend" at Spelman College (1962), "Oh Dad, Poor Dad" at the Pocket Theater (1964), and a production of "Seascape" by the Rocket Theater (1986).
