Collection Description

Historical Note

Conrad Chester Pearman was a Confederate soldier born November 18, 1830 to Jonathan and Letitia Wakefield Pearman. Differing accounts put his birthplace as either Franklin County, Georgia or nearby in South Carolina. He was married to Emily Irene Mitchell Pearman and had four children. He served as a private in Company H, 15th Georgia Infantry Regiment from 1861 until his capture at Gettysburg in 1863. Pearman died in a hospital at Point Lookout Maryland on December 20, 1863.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of 24 letters written by Conrad Chester Pearman to his wife Emily, written from 1861-1863. Most of them were written from various camps in Virginia and the subject matter deals with family, health, and camp life. Accompanying the letters is a typewritten guide edited by Mary Frances Thomas Bryan, Conrad's great granddaughter. This guide, compiled in 1961, gives transcriptions, an inventory of the letters with dates and locations, a genealogy, an alternate spelling guide, information on Pearman's company, an index, and a bibliography. The collection also contains a copy of a Hart County jury duty summons for Mr. Pearman from 1859.
